A reader asked:

All what I want to do in life is to become an entrepreneur because I love to create new and great things, but I don’t have a clue in what I’m going to entrepreneur. I Don’t know if it will be a service or product company, for instance. In this area I’m in complete darkness (I think someone need to discover what he loves to make great things). So what do you think about that? My idea is making a backpacking and travel in Europe for some months to open my mind.

I think this would be a common question, to which I can only give one answer: start creating value right now. The point is that nobody knows for sure what they’re going to do or accomplish in the next months or years. Sure, we may have plans, but before making those plans we didn’t know what we were going to do.

The problem here is spending too much time thinking about what you could do instead of focusing on what you can do right now. I’m going to give some practical advice in a minute, but before that it’s important to understand that all the planning as well as the activities toward achieving your plans can only happen in the present moment, not tomorrow or in the next month.

Shifting your focus from thinking about the future to focusing on the present moment will enable you to accomplish real things instead of wondering about all the possibilities.

Having said that, in this specific case I would start by making a list of all your current interests and picking one that particularly interests you. The best way to become an entrepreneur is by fixing an existing problem that people have by introducing something new and more powerful. But don’t stop there, ideas don’t come as easily as you would want them to come, so start by creating a blog around your interest and socializing with like minded people. Spread your ideas around.

If you put enough efforts you’ll soon start to have countless ideas about what you could do, but at that point you’ll also have a network of people with interests similar than yours that you can ask help from.

The best way to get ideas is by doing, so start doing something right now.

Don’t focus on the money when you’re first starting but instead focus on creating as much value as possible, and you’ll soon find what you were looking for.
