The Power Of Everyday

We have too much time. I do, you do, and everyone else probably does. The truth is that we don’t know what to do with all the time we have. You don’t believe me? So why aren’t you always working on your most important tasks? I don’t know the answer, but the truth is still that we don’t know what to do with all the time we have.

Ok so, it’s time for another productivity trick today. This one I learned by listening all the time people explaining their theory that if you sleep 1 hour less per day, you’ll save 365 hours of awaking hours in a year. Wow what a big number, actually more than 2 weeks if you do the math. Still, I prefer to sleep 8 to 9 hours per night and enjoy the rest of the day better, but that’s just me.

But that got me thinking, instead of waking up 1 hour earlier every day, why don’t I take 10-15 minutes everyday to do something that I put off because it was so much work to do at once? After a while I thought it was a great ideas and I came up with a list of things I could do:

  • By sending an email to someone new every day (5 mins), I will reach 365 people in a year.

  • By reading ten minutes while waiting in line every day, I’ll be able to read one book every two weeks, or 24 books in a year.

  • By meditating 15 minutes every day, I’ll probably be able to learn to fly in a year

  • By doing internet marketing 20 minutes per day, I’ll know at least what works and what doesn’t after a year.

  • Or… I could write a book, learn a new language, put some order in my room (ok maybe in 2 years), do some sport and get way more fit, and a lot lot more.

Wow, I made that list in probably 3 minutes, still it shows the power of doing something every day. Of course I can’t do everything in that list, or maybe I could, but I’m not yet a productivity ninja.

Anyway, don’t underestimate how much you can do with your time, and since we are talking about productivity (time is everything), I’ll keep this post short.

Here’s the homework: pick one of your items in your todo list and do something every day until it’s done Mark it as finished and pick something else. Don’t invent new things to do, pick something that you already have to do and stick with it.

When you say it like that, it makes it seem so simple! Probably because it is. Half the battle to getting things done is doing them in manageable portions, so this fits right in.

I love your first line how we have TOO MUCH time. Love that. IT’s so true. If I was going to pass tomorrow, I doubt I"d be checking emails and stats" I’d be out playing with LIFE!!!

    Thanks for this, Oscar. Twitted!!!

20 minutes a day is enough to be conversational in a new language in a year! I never thought of learning to fly though, interesting idea! Where do you start? :)

Man Oscar. This is a brilliant post. You made it sound easy, and it is actually easy. It’s just that our mind tend to always exaggerate the amount of effort needed. Good post Oscar. Keep it coming.

Thanks Karlil for your support. I do believe it’s easy. If you think it’s hard, it will be hard, but if you think it’s easy, it will be easy.

Hey Alex, I didn’t know about that book. I don’t think a book will make a productivity ninja but it’ll help for sure.

Awesome post, Oscar! It’s so true, when you put it in that perspective. I constantly feel swamped for time but the truth is, my time management sucks. I do think it’s okay to not be productive every waking hour. ;) Hmmm… 20 minutes a day, so simple that you can totally miss it the message.

PS- I also prefer to sleep that extra hour too (although I haven’t lately).

Yeah, why trying to optimize that extra hour and feeling tired when we have a whole day to us.

Great perspective Oscar! It really is amazing what you can accomplish with a little extra time though. I recently joined the 21st century and bought a cell phone. I went with a smartphone so I could check my email on the go and I’ve found that being able to use otherwise wasted time like waiting in lines (as you mentioned) or riding the bus (I can’t read books in vehicles) has given me at least an hour a day to work on new/important tasks.

As for getting up 1 hour earlier, I have found that getting up earlier AND going to bed earlier has allowed me to increase the quality of my activities while not depriving me of any sleep. Instead of spending an hour in the evening watching TV or playing video games since I’m too tired to do anything useful, I get to spend an hour in the morning reading, working on personal development activities or just relaxing with a cup of coffee while watching the sun rise (although it’s now dark when I get up, not quite as nice).

Anyway, good advice, keep it coming!

Dave, your strength is in your AND because you are not depriving sleep, on the contrary becoming an early riser is generally a tremendous boost in productivity. Thanks for your insightful comment!

Great points. Another incredible way to add to this, would be to ween yourself off tv.

Do something each and every day will compound. I believe its the art for daily compounding. By the end of the year if you talk to 1 person each day, you will make a bunch of friends and have crazy communications skill. If you work out 3 days a week, then you will be fit in a year. If you do daily goals for success you can be a millionaire in 1 year. You see, it about daily progress.
