2010 will begin in just two weeks, and this is the perfect time for us to set new goals, except that I’ve never done it before. in fact I’ve always planned when I needed to do so, without waiting for the new year to come. Still, this time is different because I feel the need to realign my goals and values.
The reason I feel a need to realign my goals is because I just had a few days of laziness where I would get bored doing anything from reading to working.
This is not good and I know it was a sign, so after a while I decided to deal with it and save my sanity.
Planning for the long term
I think that it’s difficult to come up with a general way to plan for long term goals, as everyone is different. However we can still use a general framework to help us planning for the new year.
The following is what I’ve used so far. It’s based on simplicity and practicality as I don’t want to start the new year with too much things to do.
- Acknowledge your current situation. It’s extremely useful to do a quick review of your current situation. Some areas you may want to look at are finance, health and relationships. Don’t be afraid of doing this analysis, as there’s always a way to fix all the problems, but you have to clarify them first.
- Deal with necessities first. It doesn’t help to work only in your finances if you already have a good income but your relationships sucks.
- Make a plan. At this point I usually have a list of 3 or 4 areas where I want to see improvements, so I write down a goal for each of them. It sounds easy that it’s not, as you have to write something specific and achievable, and write a small plan for it. I’ll show you an example of this later in the article.
- The map is not the territory. The fact that you have a plan doesn’t mean that everything will work the way you expected, so be prepared to change it accordingly.
Not just goals
When I think of the new year, I also think at how I would like to be. This is slightly different than setting goals, because I am thinking at personality traits rather than physical things. For these I just make a list of how I would like to be.
A practical example
Theory is good, but let’s see a practical example of planning.
In the following example you can see that I only have two goals for 2010 and three personality traits where I want to excel. As you can see I didn’t go for quantity but rather for quality.

Hey Oscar.
Good call about acknowledging our current situation. Sometimes we make goals like we are someone else, or like we have some ability we don’t currently have yet. They seem cool at first, but they are not goals for us, as they are for someone else. Our goals have to only be for us, regardless of how small or useless they may seem to someone else. They won’t seem small or useless for long if we keep making them specifically for ourselves.
I like the simple usage of that piece of paper. It is clean and neat, and you can see exactly what you want to be doing. The traits you are seeking to build up or maintain are winning ones as pro-activity solves the majority of other problems. I like your transparency.

Hey Armen, thanks for your feedback. Another problem with writing a lot of goals is that it’s difficult to achieve them all.

Quality over quantity, that’s the way to go. I also wrote down some goals for 2010 today while sitting in a café thouh there are still some things to clarify… the idea is to get to a similar simple list as yours.

Clarifying is a continuos process ;)

I went through a similar thing about a week ago, getting bored with the everyday etc.
In setting goal’s and figuring out what I wanted to be doing to give me some sort of purpose, the best advice I was given was to write down “What can’t I NOT do”… Sounds like a double negative but it was the most focused question I had to ask myself.
Have you got any ideas on the new websites you’re going to build? Surely the internet would be getting a bit saturated with traffic driving advertising sites, what are your thoughts on this?

The market is already saturated but new niches and opportunities appear everyday. I believe that if we can offer people what they really want the concept of competition vanishes.

It’s definitely important to deal with the necessities first. Otherwise you’ll only be left with things that will make you feel good about yourself, however, not things that you will really enjoy your life with.
One thing to point out tho, everybody always thinks that a new year is a completely new fresh start. It isn’t, it is just an illusion of a new beginning when it is just the same as any other day of this world’s existence.
People don’t have to wait until the start of 2010 to take action and change their circumstance. People can do it right now if they want to.

I agree, that’s how it’s only a coincidence that I’m doing this these days. However for some people the new year might be the kick in the ass they need.

Hey Oscar,
I got big plans for my blog in 2010. I’m revealing them to you guys on January the 1st.
I love that idea that the map is not the territory. It’s important to be prepared for things that don’t always go according to plan.

Hey Oscar!
I like your minimalist approach, but I think I’m really going to go big with my goals for this year. I can’t wait to put them in action – though I haven’t really thought of them yet.
It’s all about finding what works for you, though – some people prefer less goals, some prefer more. I’m of the latter category since I find that goals really make me push myself to be the best I can be.
Cheers!

For going big, do you mean having 100 little projects or 2-3 big projects? I actually prefer the last but that’s just what works better for me ;)
reply to this comment
Somewhere in between. A couple BIG projects and a lot of small ones to tackle along the way.

Haha, funny you mention new years goals, cause I’ve NEVER made one in my life that I’ve taken seriously, however this year is certainly different. I definitely wanna make a goal that I can both agree with and feel holds true values to what I believe in.
Hope all is well Oscar!

I love the concept of being instead of having, Oscar. Sometimes we can’t control outside circumstances but we can always control who we choose to be.

Oscar,
I have been focusing on what I want to accomplish in 2010 since sometime in November because I think that the New Year’s Syndrome is a really dangerous place to be. It basically puts you in a position where you can fall victim to conditioned behavior where you set goals but don’t look back at them until next year. Granted, since we are a bunch of personal development bloggers, that’s probably not gonna happen :). Best to you in 2010.
