How to Be Successful

Knowing how to be successful is probably one of the most desired dreams of every person. When you know the formula to become successful, you can apply it to every aspect of your life, like family, career, sport, etc.

If you want to be successful in life, you first have to understand that the process is really a shift of your thoughts. In fact, successful people know that you have to change inside before you can pretend to change your outside actions.

How to be successful

The following is the four steps formula that allowed me to achieve many goals I had, like leaving my day job three years ago and become self employed, starting my martial arts training, and it’s also the same formula I’m using now for my 10,000 euros/month experiment.

Here are the four steps you need to take if you want to be successful:

  1. Know what you want. The first step you need to take is to define exactly what you want. For example you might want to loose 30 pounds, or buy a new car. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it’s something that can be measured, otherwise you’ll not be able to know if you have achieved it or not.

  2. Take action. The second step to be successful is to take massive action. You could have the greatest idea in the world, but you’ll never know if it’ll work unless you take action. As a general rule, always do what you think would produce the most outcome and what would move you closer to your goal.

  3. Track what you do. Taking action is important, but you must keep track of the outcome of everything you do in order to see what works and what doesn’t.

  4. Keep improving. By analyzing the results of your actions you can see what works best for you and you can change your behavior until you get what you want. Keep doing what’s already working and constantly test new things that you believe could have the greatest impact on your goal.

The four steps formula it’s simple, yet it can be applied to many situations. I know it may sounds like common sense for many, but those are the four fundamental steps you need to take if you want to be successful in what you do.

You should give particular attention to point 3 and 4, as those could be easily the difference between success and failure.

I prepared some slides for whose who like a quick reference.

Oscar, great tips. CLARITY IS definitely #1, then commitment. And Belief. I enjoyed the slide show, but I’m a visual person.

    Off to twitter this!

Hey Brian, I also wanted to make a video, but I thought the four points were already clear. Thanks for your feedback.

    Hey Oscar,

One of my favorite topics! Your ideas on success remind me of a book I found very useful called Psychological Foundations of Success. It’s written by a Harvard trained scientist (Stephen Kraus). You and this guy seem to be pretty much on the same page about success.

    Hey Oscar.

This is cool. Each of us can place what our own success plans are into your steps that you have shown, and then we see what we need to do.

I like the Scribd slideshow you made there, which looks cool, and is pleasant to go through. It is a nice clean process here, and people need to look no further for the basics of how to get from their point A to a desired point B.

    Glad to see this.

    Hey Oscar!

Nice post! Success is what everyone dreams of.
Success means something different to every person, it just means reaching the goals you set for yourself. SO it is important to set realistic but hard goals, so that it will be a challenge to reach it, but it is not impossible :)

    Cheers!

    Great simple and accurate advice.

That is really all it takes! The problem is that we want too much and we don’t want to work too hard.

If we can just focus on one or two things and put all of our effort into it, then anything is possible.

Was reminded of one super-guru (okay it’s Tony Robbins) when you’ve mentioned #2.

    Take MASSIVE Action

    Haha. ;)

    Oscar,

I love you have completely simplified the process. We could plug virtually any goal into this formula and if we stuck to it we’d likely be successful.

Taking action is probably the biggest one there on that list that separates the couch infomercial flickers to people who crush it

    Good list oscar

The most important step here is to take action. There can be all the planning and preparation in the world, all the tracking, goal setting, benchmarking. But the fact is the successful people in this world are the ones that get off the sidelines and into the game.

    Oscar,

I’ve found a killer way to track your progress is to write your goals and stuff down on a whiteboard and use a spreadsheet to track goals long-term. It really helps as a reminder to get after your goals, keep you motivated, and plan everything out. I really recommend it.

    Cheers,
    Brett

    Hey Oscar,

Great post and very timely. I think what people measure as success also makes a difference. What might be seen as successful to some, may not to others. The goal posts may be closer or further so to speak. Some people keep their goals so far that success ultimately never comes.

    1. - Never quit.
I’m sure that could be assumed or included in #4 – Keep improving. But I find most of the people I know try something, come to the realization that either it’s too much work or their not getting instant gratification and they ultimately quit.

So many people nowadays think they can get rich quick, or get rich doing next to nothing. If the path to success includes #2 – Take Action, then one should assume it will take a lot of hard work.

This is not to say everyone’s goal is to become rich, but I’m sure rule #5 applies to most, if not all goals to become successful in something.

Anyways, thanks for the post. I am now an avid reader :) Have a good night!

Wow, simple and clean – I love this post. I’m going to keep your formula in mind when I work on my goal – much humbler, 2000€ a month, but it streches me from where I am now :)

Thanks for the inspiration – I’ll RSS you.
