How to Achieve Your Goals

I have many goals for this year, such as earning $1000/month from passive income (as a part of my 10,000/euros month major goal), growing this blog even more, and read 50 books. I have a lot of dreams, but a huge view of reality at the same time.

There’s no way I’m going to do all of this without an effective plan of action.

Yes, because at the end of the day it’s what we actually did that matters, not how much we thought about doing it. It sounds simple in words, yet I know how much self discipline is needed to take action.

But it doesn’t need to be hard

You see, it’s not written anywhere that you have to kill yourself to achieve your goals. Indeed I developed a simple method for achieving my goals that will probably do wonders for you too.

Three new hours per day

With this simple method I increased my productivity and effectiveness by 500% in one week. I did so by simplifying and decluttering my todo list.

There are two fundamental steps to take if you want to increase your productivity and effectiveness. Everything else is bullshit without these two rules, so pay attention. The first one is to identify what you have to do. And the second one is to find the time to take action.

Knowing what to do

Let’s first talk about the first step. Identifying what you need to do.

The Pareto rule states that 20% of your efforts are responsible for 80% of your results. That means that if you worked 8 hours today, 2 of those hours were responsible for 80% of your today’s accomplishments. Don’t worry tough, I’m not going to ask you to leave your day job today.

Now let me show you a practical application of this rule. Let’s say that you have 10 goals for this year: eating healthy, start a business, become fit, start a blog, etc. There’s no way you are going to accomplish all of those things all at once. Forget it. Instead you have to choose the two most important goals and focus on those.

How to chose? Which one or two of those goals would have the greatest impact in your life if they were already accomplished?

Finding the time

Now comes the interesting part, finding the time to work on your goals. Let me tell you in advance that you have to make a choice. You have to choose which activities you are going to stop doing in order to find enough time to work on your goals.

The secret to productivity is to allocate a big enough chunk of time each day for working on your goals. And the best way to do that is by having a schedule. Like when you are at work.

For example to work on my goals I developed the following schedule:

  • 6.00 – 7.00. Writing. In this time I sit down and write articles like this one. It’s incredible how more productive I am when I write in the morning. The number one activity that produces the most important results for my blog is writing, so it makes sense to me to focus my time and energies on creating powerful content every day.

  • 13.30 – 14.30. Working. During this time I work on my business. Right now I’m working on a web application, so I make sure that I spend this hour exclusively working on that. I’m not going to make any money without a real business, so I have to work on that.

  • 21.00 – 22.00. Reading. Reading is extremely important for me, so in the evening I do just that. If I want to read one book per week, I have to read nearly one hour per day, every day. I usually split the number of pages of the book in five parts, so I know how much pages I have to read each day, and if I finish to read earlier, I go to bed earlier.

I consider this schedule to be highly productive. Three goals per day are certainly a lot of work, but they can be done. You can do the same if you want. You can get up at six if you go to bed early, and you probably can find an hour during your lunch break to work on your goals.

But what’s even more interesting, is that you can just start with one hour per day. To say the whole truth, you actually have to start with just one hour per day.

You can develop a similar system for yourself. Start with one hour, preferably in the morning, and focus on the number one goal you want to achieve this year. Identify the number one activity that will provide the greatest chances of achieving your goal, and do just that.

Conclusion

The Pareto rule is essential for increasing your effectiveness, but it’s nothing if you don’t have the time to work on your goals. If you start today with a system like this one, you’ll achieve great things in no time. Give it a try for one month.

Dream big Oscar. Three extra hours a day is huge. I get up super early to fit in my exercise. I can’t write early because if I do my kids just get up and chat to me… I think we have similar goals. I need to make sure my writing time is totally free of distractions – phone, email, other people. I know I’ll fit so much more in:)

Well Oscar, It looks like you have a very busy schedule and enjoy it at the same time. Honestly, I couldn’t have that kind of a schedule. There are some things which do not relate to my growth and I simply have to squeeze in there: like going out with my friends, parties and salsa dancing.

Eduard, go for there. Some items in this list really excite me. Hacking on a new project is something I really enjoy to do, and that’s the same for writing and reading.

My schedule is pretty much packed (yeah, I’m actually found seated in front of my comp from 10am till 2am almost daily).

I gotta agree that I find the early part of the day my best time for writing. It’s easier to get words out before being distracted by other businesses (1 that I co-own dealing with wholesale BBQ in Singapore, 3 more sites for my parent’s existing business, and now working on my latest project that’s still in hush hush stage).

The identifying part and scheduling time to do are exactly the same approach that I have been taking for the most of Jan. One example: I wake up at 10am, done my personal stuff like brunch and shower before 1130am. Next I’ll decide (identify) on the 3 core tasks to get done before 4pm (eg: one advertisement image, or 3 pages of content, or edit a copy). Anytime after 5pm are used for leisure, like reading books or going out with my friends. The only difference now is that with a new project, I’d just go overtime cranking out and editing content and images until I get used to it (usually a new project takes 3 days to done—-I’m at day 2 for the current one).

It’s usually after 10pm when I start to slow down and reading up blogs in my Google Reader. :p

The bottom line still stays; identify the top 2 (for me, 3) most important tasks (or the one’s that makes you fulfilled), and take time to get them done. You’ve said it well in your other post titled:
Why Doing Less Improves Your Productivity.

Keep it going strong Oscar. I’m waiting to see the monthly update here. ;)

Oscar, you speak the truth, brother! I think it’s essential to find your ‘productive time’s for certain activities. Lately, articles have been easy to write around 7 or 8p.m. Exercising was great to get over with at 6-7 am. (For me, that is).

Can I ask what kind of programming you do? I’ve been employed as a .NET programmer for a couple of years, so that’s the path I’m headed on for now. Just curious :)

Hey Oscar – this is definitely some sound advice. And I think that dedication is also key as once you create the schedule, you need to be able to battle the resistance that arrives in the form of procrastination and other anti-progress mindsets!

Knowing what you want makes all of the difference in the world. Picking between choice A and B an easy task. Knowing what you want gives you clarity and you are able to adjust your life accordingly and eliminate what is not essential.

It’s important not to just set goals, but set goals that are aligned with who you are and your life purpose.

    Best,
    Tomas

Hey Tomas, of course those goals have to be very important. I also think the activities we do should be of high value, so with one hour of work we can still accomplish a lot.

Well, The most important things about achieving goals using the toddler method to success – It’s simple. Divide your goal into tiny baby steps over calendar. The steps should be tiny enough to complete in your available time. Don’t hurry up, just relax and keep going ahead.

I use this and it works wonderfully for me. Simple and easy.

Do you have a full time job Oscar or are your web apps enough to cover your expenses? I find it hard to juggle my online pursuits with a full time job. Especially now my girlfriend is home all the time and starved of attention all day. When I get home she wants to talk and hug and spend time together. What the hell is up with that??

I keep meaning to do a schedule myself. Ironically, I keep putting it off!

How is the $1000/month and 10,000 euro challenge going anyway?

ironically this is also the hardest part of being productive. Identifying tasks that actually matter is more difficult than it sounds.

btw. 1000 a month passive is a good goal. Doing freelance work (i.e non passive) for 1000 is relatively easy. You should write a post some time about how its coming along

This is a simple yet profound post! :D I came across an e-book by Leo Babauta’s journey to gain 100K subscribers in 2 years! I was just overwhelmed and daunted. But if I just identify my priorities and focus on those, I guess I can fulfill my goals in time.

I also intend to read 5 books a month. It’s workable and I managed to read all the books in my January reading list. :D

That’s a great schedule to stick to, Oscar. In addition to identifying what you have to do, you also have set realistic expectations. Some people get discouraged if things don’t go their way so they postponed their plan until they eventually forget about it. Know your limitations to get an accurate picture of your long-term plan. Then turn these weaknesses into self-help motivation to propel you to achieve your goals.
