Today marks the first year of Freestyle Mind. It’s incredible how much this website has grown during these short 12 months, and how much I’ve grown myself.
I want to start this post with a big thank you to all those people who contributed during this time. From loyal subscribers who started to follow this journey during the first days to those who are reading this website today for the first time. You are awesome, and I’ll be grateful forever. I also want to say a special thank you to some people who contributed a lot to make this website come true.
Most Visited Posts
If you are curious about stats, in the past year this website has received more than 390,000 visits, averaging less than 100 visits a day during the first few months to over 1000 visits a day in the last few months.
The following are the ten most popular posts (based on total views):
- Mental Math Tricks to Impress Your Friends (191,749 visits)
- 30 Habits that Will Change your Life (55,898 visits)
- Waking Up at 5 am Experiment – Conclusion (41,580 visits)
- 27 Traits Of Successful People (16,329 visits)
- How To Keep Track Of What You’ve Learnt (14,051 visits)
- 43 Ways to Start Making Money Right Now (11,407 visits)
- 30 Days Habit Change – Waking up At 5 am Day 1 (6,332 visits)
- How I Increased My Productivity By Simply Going Outside (6,002 visits)
- The Law of Attraction (5,563 visits)
- How to quit smoking (4,757 visits)
These are not necessarily the best posts; just those that received the most views. You can find the complete archive here.
Lesson Learned
When I first started this website, I could barely speak English (just read my first posts). With time, however, my skills improved dramatically and I’m starting to see some serious results.
Regarding monetization, I’ve never really tried to monetize this website as my focus was (and still is) providing great content. However, despite that you are seeing no ads on this website, I did make around 600-700 dollars, money that allowed me to cover server costs and also to sponsor some very cool contests. I know for a fact that I could make around $500 dollars/month very easily without changing anything, but I already have an internet business I’m working on, and I don’t want to compromise quality here in any way.
The Future Of Freestyle Mind
The more I write on this blog, the more ideas I have. There’s a lot of stuff I want to talk about. Last year I wrote 154 posts, and I received many, many emails from readers. This year I want to do even better.
I’m moving to Spain this summer and I’ll be doing some cool experiments with my room-mate. Of course I’ll share everything here. I also finally started to work almost full time on creating a passive income stream, so I’ll probably write about that area as well.
Another ideas I have is to create a section on this website where you can create, share and track your goals and personal development challenges, but I’m still trying to figure out the best way to do so. By the way, if you have any feedback or request, I’m all hears.
Prizes
As a way to give back, I will donate 1 Amazon Gift Card of $20 dollars to two random people who will leave a comment on this post. You can use the gift card however you want. In an ideal world I would donate something to each of the thousands of visitors that come here everyday, but I’m still figuring out a way to do that. In the meantimem you can subscribe to the RSS Feed, as there will be more contests in the future.
A Personal Request
As a final note, I would really appreciate if you could leave a comment here with your feedback about this website (good or bad). It would also be cool for me to know more about you, so feel free to send me an email and to tell me more about yourself.
Thank your for this great first year.
P.S. I’ll select two random winners next Wednesday.
Hey Oscar,
Congratulations!
The first year of blogging is the hardest. I also had the same problem with English not being my first language
-readers sometimes have no idea how much I struggled (and still struggle!) with it, especially on the very early days of the blog. But we both know that in the end it’s all worth it!Keep rocking! :)
reply to this comment
Thanks Luciano. The first year was hard by I learned a lot, and if I could go back I’d do everything again!

Hi Oscar
I am honestly so impressed with what you have done here in a year. It is really hard to believe that you couldn’t speak much English a year ago – your English is brilliant! Really pleased to hear about your continued success – you absoutely deserve it. One of the things I really like about you and your site Oscar is that you are so focussed on what you can give, it is really touching.
Thanks for the continued inspiration.

Hi Oscar!
You know what my feedback is, freestylemind.com is one of my favourite blogs, ranking higher than most prominent self-development blogs where some guru tells us nonsense.
You are always writing real things, with real solutions for real problems. Keep on it!
Ruben

Hey Ruben, I’m happy to hear that! Hope we can meet in Barcellona in july.

I have to agree. The first posts where not that great. But over the months the content of this blog has improved dramatically. Always looking forward to reading your posts.
Keep up the good work!
reply to this comment
Thanks Jef, I’m looking forward to improve even more in the next year.
reply to this comment
Hi Oscar.
You’re doing smooth, writing just fine, progressing at a fast pace, and staying modest. These are all good things.
I like that you mention that the most visited posts are not necessarily the most full of impact, because that is often the case, and it is cool that they got those view numbers.
The site has its own look that is separate from any other site and that is what many seek.
Good material doing it big in your own way.
reply to this comment
Hey Armen, in my experience there are a lot of posts that if I would write now would get way more traffic, but I also know that without them this blog would not have grown like it did.

definitely good dude…keep the level of enthusiasm same as u did in last year

I love your site. The information you supply is both insightful and fun. In your post you stated, “In an ideal world I would donate something to each of the thousands of visitors that stumble here everyday” and you do with the quality of posts you provide. Thanks again for supplying me with greats reads.

Thanks Earl, I’ll do my best to donate even more then!

Thanks a lot for your work, this has been one of my favorite blogs for a few months now. Somehow your posts just inspire, force to do something and make a change, without ever being banal and trite. I would say keep up the good work, but your blog is about personal development so become even better during the next year! :)
Cheers.

Hello oscar!
First of all, congratulations! I have been following your blog for almost 3 months now and have always loved your experiments and posts. The best part about your blog that makes it different from other blogs is its simplicity, I feel.
Keep up the good work! I will always be waiting for a new post here!
Btw, how did you manage to make money from this blog without any advertising? Just curious.. ;)
reply to this comment
The money I made where from a few affiliate links of stuff that I really recommended (books for example).
reply to this comment
Thanks :)
Keep up the great work!
reply to this comment
Oscar, you know you got my huge support. Loved your stuff since day one. As Ruben wrote (in slightly different words) your transparency really shines thru.) Because I like “you”, I enjoy reading your content. And the value you provide has definitely grown exponentially!

I did not know about productivity before. As far as I remember, I stumbled upon your website for the very first time from Lifehacker, I think.
But as a month later, I requested you to share your daily reading productivity websites and you responded me back with a post. It was my first journey stepping into the world of productivity and personal development and that’s the world I find most valuable from internet.
They inspire me to move forward, set goals, do exercises, eat on diet and so on. I become to dare to take challenges. It’s just wonderful and awesome.
Thanks you Oscar for your blog. Freestylemind is the first website I read about personal development and productivity. Keep up your good work and we’re expecting many great potentials from you.

Hi Oscar,
Freestylemind is my favorite blog, I’ll tell you why:
Your writing always felt honest, nothing boastful or glittering, it is plain honest and simple. Its because of this I read it regularly and carried out some experiments myself. Whenever I read your blog, I could connect, it feels like you know me personally and you are talking to me.
Not just your writings, but the blogs and books you suggested were also immensely helpful.
One year is a big thing, Congratulations. But I hope the blog continues for many many years to come. Happy Birthday :).
Thank You,
Harini.

Hey Harini, I hope that as well. Thanks for your kind words!

I’ve enjoyed your 30 day challenges Oscar. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Barrett, I’ll be doing more of them!

Oscar,
Congrats on reaching the one year mark. I think the fact that you’ve made it to one year alone is one of those moments that separates the people who are going to make it from the ones who are not. I’m amazed that your English was not so good when you first started because your writing is really solid. So congrats on that as well. I’m looking forward to seeing how you progress over the next year.

Thanks Srinivas, I’m a huge believer on working until you succeed. All the most beautiful things in life require some time, but once you know that then you can do everything.

Hey!
Your blog is one of my favorites, I’m always excited if I see in Google Reader that there is a new post.
I especially liked the 5 AM challenge.
Btw did you finish the 100 pushups program? I’m planning to do it in the summer.
Keep up the good work!
Bence
reply to this comment
Hey Bence, I regularly do 100 pushups, but I take breaks between them. For example I may do 5 series of 20.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU…HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUR BLOG!!!
Wow!! Congratulations!!
I like reading your blog, I think you’re a boy “out of the boxes”…and I need to find people like that!! Your blog puts a smile on my face everytime I read it!!
I know writing in English is not so easy at the beginning, but it’s true that the more you write, the more you learn!
I’ve found your blog thanks to HongYi, she suggested it to me, and now I read it quite often!
Thank you for your skills and your love for life!!!
Have a nice day!!

Hiyo!
I love your blog!
Only one minor suggestion. From my point of view the design of the logo could be a bit smoother, since it looks like a chainsaw at the top of the “e” and “s”.
Good job! Thanks!
reply to this comment
Thanks for that suggestion, I’ll try to fix it!
reply to this comment
Congrats on what has been an interesting year I imagine :)
Your blog has been a real gem upon discovering it this year, and as someone actively freshening up a stagnant lifestyle, I look forward to your new posts, as well as gradually weaving my way back through your older posts.
Keep up the good work, and look forward to what the next year brings!
All the best from Dublin,
Damien
reply to this comment
Thanks Damien, even if you don’t read all of them, what’s important is to take action wherever you find something inspiring, that’s the important thing for me.
reply to this comment
I love reading about your little experiments. Sometimes I try them too. A lot of times it’s inspiration you send my way to try something different.
I greatly appreciated being one of the people you picked to send a book too. It is my summer beach reading material. Thank you so much for that.
If I am randomly picked instead of giving me a gift card there are some pretty interesting places to make donations that I would like instead of an Amazon gift card
reply to this comment
Hey Maureen, glad you got the book. I’ll keep that in mind ;)
reply to this comment
My favourite things to read about on your blog are your different productivity experiements. It’s very inspiring!
reply to this comment
Thanks Barbi, I must push that area even more.
reply to this comment
Oscar, congratulations on your 1 year anniversary. Your stats are VERY impressive. It’s obvious that you have found your niche. Email me and I can send you a link to a networking group that is beyond awesome and will teach you everything you need to know about marketing online. It’s not a site that I personally own, but I’m there every day learning and contributing.
Speaking of contributing, you said “In an ideal world I would donate something to each of the thousands of visitors that come here everyday, but I’m still figuring out a way to do that.” You ARE doing that. You are donating all this great content! That’s better than a $20 gift card in my opinion.

Thank you Glennette, I’m sending you an email.

Hi Oscar, just wanted to say congratulations with you first year blogging. What a milestone! You’re blog is amongst one of the most genuine and authentic personal development blogs out there today. Thanks for everything you’ve done for us so far and keep up the good work!
reply to this comment
Hey hulbert, that means a lot for me, thank you
reply to this comment
I found your site via HN. After reading the post, I immediately began reading through your archives.
You inspired my One Month Codebase project, and I am now polyphasic thanks to your “10 personal challenges no one wants to take” post.
You do have that refreshingly and uniquely Italian sincerity in your writing, coupled with a polyglot’s interests.
Despite how cool your blog is now, I really can’t wait to see to see it a few decades from now. Just how much can a man improve himself?
reply to this comment
I guess that there’s no limit in how much you can improve. I’d like to know more about your polyphasic success, i’ll send you an email once i get home.
reply to this comment
Congratulations Oscar!
I don’t read any other productivity/selfhelp blogs, but I do like yours (and I’m really glad I found it through your books giveaway). Other blogs often have too much common sense advice, and/or lots of patting themselves/other people on the back. I also like the variety of topics on your blog.
reply to this comment
Thank you Helena, and I’m glad you’re still sticking around!
reply to this comment
Hi Oscar,
Congratulations!
Your blog is one of my favourites. Personal dev books are often very theoretical, while you write from experience – simple things easy to understand and easy to apply.
Thank you and keep on the good work!
reply to this comment
Thanks for the encouragement Ish. I too think theoretical books are boring, I prefer direct actions ;)

Thank you for the positive thoughts (and especially for the math tricks)!
reply to this comment
Hey Jennifer, I’m glad you liked the blog. Moving to Spain will definitely improve things. Not Spain per se, but moving to different countries is always a good experience.

Hi Oscar,
The reason behind your success, in my opinion, is down to the fact that you personally respond to almost all your comments. This makes us readers feel appreciated and part of your world.
Keep it up!
reply to this comment
Hey Chris, I think responding to people who take their time to leave a comment is the minimum I could do. I also like to keep the conversation going ;)

Hey Oscar,
Great going and do keep it up and improve with each post. I will be following you and your blog as I have been doing so for a while now.
Take care!

Hi Oscar, your blog is great!
Also, being Italian myself, your blog is a big inspiration for me, as I always felt like one has to be a native English speaker in order to have a successful blog like yours and achieve these results.
Congrats ;)
reply to this comment
Hey Lorenzo, I used to think that as well, but I decided to see if it was really true. Turns out a lot of great bloggers are not native english speaker!
